STEADY HAND, BULLSEYE

The Alka of Sinj, traditional knights’ contest, takes place every summer in the little Croatian town of Sinj. The contest was established in 1715 and it reminds of medieval knights’ tournaments: the alkars, traditional knights in parade costumes ride their horses and try to hit the alka, a three – hole metal ring. A similar contest takes place in the little village Brnaze, but the participants are children. It is a great honour for every little villager to run the tournament. They do not ride horses like their adult counterparts: they run, carrying a pole and trying to hit bullseye. Like adult knights, boys have nicknames too. Dino Vuckovic called How is nine years old and this year will compete for the last time. He began competing when he was three, six times he tried and still has not won. His biggest role model is older brother Joseph called Plugin; he has won all competitions he participated. Preparations for the big event are in full swing and Dino is training more and more intensive. His friends are around, his father and brother have a lot of important tips, mother and grandmother too. – A steady hand, bullseye! – repeats his father. The big day is approaching, the excitement is growing. Whether Dino have a steady hand, hit the bullseye and win the tournament?
